Hello and welcome to The Study Gurus!
We are a doctor and lawyer husband and wife team based in Auckland, New Zealand, and since 2010 we have been helping high school teens all over the world get better at studying.
We may come from a very small country at the bottom of the Pacific, and like all of our fellow countrymen struggle to make different vowel sounds (are you saying bear, bare or beer?!), but we know HOW to study and prepare for exams extremely well, and we’re here to teach all of our study wisdom to your teen.
Our credentials…
The road to becoming a doctor and a lawyer has involved a LOT of exams. Studying is what we do best.
Of course first there were high school exams. We both graduated high school with high academic honors (Chris even took out top geek prize — graduating as Dux (valedictorian) of his school). We met as lab partners in 2006 at the University of Auckland, where we were both studying Biomedical Science. Chris went on to finish his degree with first class honors, and Clare a Postgraduate Diploma. But, the study didn’t end there…
Before embarking on further study Chris worked as a research assistant looking at the genetics of lung disease and Clare tutored high school students in science and math. Working in a lab made Chris realize that he was missing the people-side of science and wanted to study medicine, and after realizing that she loved having rants Clare thought she would try to put that passion to use and study law.
And so back to university we went. This time in Melbourne, Australia. Chris went to Med School at Deakin University and Clare completed her Juris Doctor (postgraduate law degree) at the University of Melbourne. Chris graduated from Med School with numerous academic honors, including top of his class across all medical subjects, and Clare graduated from Law School in the top 10% of her class.
By this point we had sat about 110 external exams at College level, and that’s not including three years of high school exams. We had refined our study process down to a tee.
Finally, and to our parents’ great relief, we embraced the real world and joined the workforce. Working as a doctor and a lawyer, one of the things we love about our careers is that they both involve life-long learning.
Why we started The Study Gurus…
We understand what your teen needs to do to study efficiently and effectively. We understand what’s required of your teen to properly prepare for exams, and how to sit their exams so that they get the very best grades they’re capable of.
Since finishing our undergraduate degrees in 2008 we have been helping high school students learn how to study.
Learning how to study effectively was something we had to figure out on our own, but we were lucky that studying was something we both just… well, ‘got’. But we know that a lot of students are not so lucky…
We decided that we had to share what we know about studying with as MANY students as possible, and so in 2010 we started sharing our study skills with the world.
With over 150 exams sat between us, we are fortunate to be in the position where we can share our study know-how with your teen. They don’t have to go through it alone — we’re here to guide them through their high school studies so that they reach their academic potential.
