Parents have it tough.
Not only do you have to find the time to work, keep healthy, and look after a household, you somehow have to find the time to help your teenager(s) study and get good grades at high school. Jeez. And even if you have the time to do so, do you actually know how to help your teen study effectively?
Well luckily we do.
We both have more than eight years experience at sitting exams, and – if we don’t say so ourselves – we’ve gotten pretty good at it.
Who Are We?
We’re originally from Auckland, New Zealand, but moved to Melbourne in 2012 to study (again).
We became friends at the University of Auckland in 2006 when we were just starting off our degrees in Biomedical Science. We decided at the beginning of 2010 that it was no good us hanging on to what we’d learnt about studying without sharing it with the high school kids of today, and so The Study Gurus was born.
At the same time as being the tech geek behind The Study Gurus, Chris went on to complete his Biomedical Science degree with first class honours. He specialised in human genetics, with a particular focus and interest on the genetics surrounding the development of lung cancer. After a couple of years working as a research scientist for a small biotech company in Auckland, Chris had an epiphany about what he wanted to do, and he is now studying Medicine at Deakin University.
A similar life course has played out for Clare. After finishing her Biomedical Science degree she had no idea what she wanted to do career-wise. She loves The Study Gurus, and is who you hear from in our weekly blog articles, but she suspected she wasn’t through with studying for herself just yet. After being a high school tutor in maths and science in between degrees, Clare is now doing the Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne.
Do we know what we’re talking about?
Putting modesty aside for one moment – studying is what we do best. It’s our thing. We both achieved highly at high school and at university.
But what’s just as (if not more) important is that we know why we do well. We understand the exact steps we take every time we sit down to write an essay, or complete an assignment, or swat for an exam.
We’ve got the process down. Which means – we can teach this to your teen.
First thing’s first –
Sign up to our free Straight A’s email course.
I’ll show you how to -
- Motivate your teen to actually want to study. (It is possible!)
- Figure out what study techniques work for YOUR teen, no one else’s.
- Instil in your teen the study habits of a straight-A student. (Good study habits are essential for successful studying.)
There’s more information about how you can help your teen succeed at high school on the For Parents page.
If at any time you have ANY questions or comments I’m only an email away. I’d really love to hear from you!
